You’ve probably walked into a pharmacy, or a grocery store, and have seen those prepaid credit cards sitting on the shelf. You’re probably asking if it’s worth it? I’m going to tell you right now that they aren’t, and let me explain why. There are many disadvantages to buying a prepaid card, because you can get one for free online.
They have fees: The first thing that you’re going to notice when you want to buy a prepaid card is that there are going to be fees just to activate the thing. It’s going to vary anywhere from $5-$10. That’s a complete waste of money.
Some of them expire: Unlike applying for a card, you’ll find that if you buy one, they are going to have an expiration date. This isn’t something you’ll want either. You don’t want to walk into the store, swipe your card, and find out that you can’t use it, since it expired.
Applying online has a lot of advantages. The process works just like a credit card application. You’ll want to put in all of your information, and as long as you get approved (which you will if you have the funds), you can start using your card in the mail.
The cool thing about these cards is that you’re able to reload them, and many of them don’t carry fees. Yes, there are some that do have fees, but just make sure that you read the fee schedule before you go out and apply for a card, it will help you out tremendously.
